Plumbers & Pipefitters 83 – Wheeling

Apprenticeship
The United Association of Plumbers & Steamfitters (UA) along with partner contractors oversees a five-year apprenticeship program.  Individuals must apply and, if chosen, become part of a select group of men and women motivated to learn a complex and challenging trade while upholding the ideals of trade unionism.

UA apprentices learn through both classroom and paid on-the-job training in what is considered to be the best construction industry apprentice program in the world. The five-year apprenticeship period is divided into one-year segments, each of which includes 1,700 to 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum of 216 hours of related classroom instruction.
All UA apprentices receive a strong general education background in the trade, with core courses in basics such as mathematics  and drawing. At a certain point, apprentices can choose a specific path to follow, to become trained as a journeyman plumber, pipefitter, sprinklerfitter, service mechanic, or HVAC refrigeration technician.
Apprenticeship is not an easy time: UA apprentices must work the same hours as journeymen plus attend night classes. Yet, this can be a highly rewarding career path for an individual who is motivated to learn the piping trade and become an active member of a proud and noble trade union.
Applicants must reside within the jurisdiction of the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local #83 which is as follows:
WV:  In Brooke County, all area south of SR 27 due east to the state line and west to the Ohio River:  Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel counties in their entireties.
OH:   In Jefferson County, all area south of SR 150 from the Ohio River to the east and the point of merger with SR 250 to the county line of Jefferson and Harrison County to the west:  Belmont County in its entirety; and in Monroe County, north of SR 78 east to the Ohio River and west to the county line.

The Recruitment, selection, employment and training of apprentices shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin or sex.  The JATC will take affirmative action to provide equal opportunities in apprenticeship and training and will operate the apprenticeship program as required under Title 29 of the code of federal regulations, Part 30.
